Motor oils with low viscosity20 june 2011
Question: What are low viscosity oils? MITASU OIL expert opinion: Low viscosity oils are motor oils with SAE viscosity grade 5W-20 and 0W-20. For over a decade, Japanese automakers have recommended the use of low viscosity oils for modern atmospheric engines. Question: Should I follow the automaker recommendations to use low viscosity oils or does it look like collusive behaviour by the world's automakers? MITASU OIL expert opinion: Indeed, the users of automotive internet portals are still debating the topic whether to follow these recommendations? We often hear about the automakers conspiracy to reduce fuel consumption and emissions at the expense of consumers by reducing the engine service life. In our view, such allegations are at the least, unfounded. For example, TOYOTA, recommends economy oil with viscosity grade 5W-20 for Altezza fitted with 1G-FE engine and prescribes the use of a thicker 10W-30 for a "hotter" model fitted with 3S-GE engine. Question: Is it true that the use of thicker oil is suggested for severe driving conditions as low viscosity oil may have lower lubrication qualities at high rpm? MITASU OIL expert opinion: High-RPM (higher than 500rpm) at extremely high temperatures (130 С° and higher) will significantly increase the wear of piston rings and cam. Thus thicker motor oil should be used. However, it is important to remember that severe driving conditions implies that the tachometer needle is permanently in the "red zone" (highway-ring races or similar). If we are talking about the normal operation of the vehicle, the use of low viscosity oils is more suitable. It is a well-known fact that 70% of engine wear occurs within the first seconds after start-up. Whereas a low viscosity oil flows to friction pairs much faster, reducing start-up wear. When a vehicle is operated in "home - work - supermarket" mode, the use of low viscosity oils should increase the engine life. Question: What low viscosity motor oils are offered in MITASU OIL range? MITASU OIL expert opinion: MITASU OIL has developed fully synthetic oils with viscosity grades 0W-20 and 5W-20 especially for car owners who would like to better protect the engine in winter (cold start, cold engine, prolonged idling in traffic) and summer (long car runs with full load, often with a trailer, going on holidays). These oils are MITASU GOLD series conforming to the latest quality standard GF-5 API SN introduced in late 2010 and raising higher demands to the stability of oils lubricity at high temperatures. Question: What is the difference between MITASU OIL low viscosity oils and similar products by other manufacturers? MITASU OIL expert opinion: In comparison to other oils of this category MITASU OIL uses a patented additive package HyperZDP™System, developed by LUBRIZOL - a world leader in additives production. Application of HyperZDP™System reduces the evaporation of phosphorus, which is a part of the basic additive and increases the service life of both - oil and engine. At the same time, reducing emissions of phosphorus in the exhaust system, HyperZDP™System significantly extends the life of the catalytic converter. MITASU GOLD series oils provide a higher degree of protection against engine wear owing to a strong oil film formed on the working surfaces of the engine. It is also important that the latest products of MITASU OIL Corporation significantly improved performance compatibility of oil with engine seals and gaskets. Moreover, a new quality standard GF-5 API SN significantly reduces the consumption of motor oil and improves fuel efficiency.
